Visual Basic 4 Unleashed

Average review score:

Excellent
I'm an experienced programmer although I'm just learning VB. This book is essential to becoming productive quickly.

Already an experienced VB programmer? This book is for you!
Being a VB Consultant and a VB Teacher, I've had the opportunity to go through many VB books. By far, VB4 Unleashed is the best. If you're already a good VB programmer, VB4 Unleashed will take you further. You'll learn how-to easily add sound (.wav) to your applications, how-to make screen savers, and even help files. Best part is that there is NO need to purchase any additional third-party controls in order to use the examples. (E.G. Learn Visual Basic in 21 days requires purchase of 3rd party OCX controls to use many of the examples.) I highly recommend this book. Visual Revelations

Fantastic journey through the world of charts and graphs!
I read this book, cover to cover, after flipping through looking at the pictures. What a great read! I will never look at a chart again, without a newfound (and critical ) eye towards the graphical representation of the information. I am also glad to see the author writing for the on-line e-zine IntellectualCapital -

Unseen
I heard Howard Wainer speak at a conference last week, and I am ordering his book sight unseen. His intellect, wit, and humor in front of the group was amazing. If the book captures half of that, it will be a treat.

Waiting to Sing

Authors: Howard Kaplan and Herve Blondon

Waiting to Sing
I recently had the opportunity to read this book to my third grade class. They enjoyed the story so much that they asked me to read it to them a second time. One of my students commented that the book was "poetry put to music". The children said that they could feel the author's emotions as I was reading. They particularly enjoyed the descriptive language. Even though the topic was sad, the students enjoyed Mr. Kaplan's writing style. The book was a fine example of what they have learned this year in Writer's Workshop. It has been strongly suggested to them that their personal writing be based upon what they know best - themselves. Mr. Kaplan wrote a book about personal loss and death and addressed the topic in a meaningful and non threatening manner.

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE PUT TO MUSIC
For parents looking for books written for children about death,I recommend this beautifully composed story. Children are exposed to death in a variety of ways and this is a book that can help waylay their fears, allow them to feel with the young boy and experience his healing. Howard Kaplan's words put the reader into the story with his lyrical prose and images. As a woman who faced the loss of her mother at a young age, I felt like Howard had captured the emptiness and the lost feelings I had at the time. Howard,as your sister who sat at that piano and played "Fur Elise" over and over again with that G Clef lamp over my head, I congratulate you on your ability to combine poetry and prose and create a beautiful book.

Wanted
Published in Paperback by Linford (November, 2001)
Author: Lance Howard
Average review score:

Another hit for Mr. Howard.
Another hit for Mr. Howard.

WANTED takes you into the mind of a man. The story brings out emotions, for that man, which you never would have dreamed of. You will understand his love for a woman who thought she would never find love. A friendship with a man who, at first glance, you would think could never have a man as a friend. And the hatred of another man who actually deserves more hatred than even Duel Winston can heap upon him.

Duel Winston is a man on a mission. He has a woman he wants to marry, and spend the rest of his life with, but cannot do it until he cashes in on two more bounties. Up until now, nothing mattered to Duel, except the next hard case, but things have changed. He cannot get the face of the woman, he left behind a year ago, out of his mind, much less his heart.

In the past searching for hard cases, and collecting the bounty for them, had been a drive, something he had to do. It was as much a part of him as eating and sleeping. But this time it is just a job. A way to an end. A way to be with Sam. After catching and turning over John Barlow, and another wanted man, St. Elmo, Duel will have enough money to set himself and Sam up on a ranch somewhere. And there will be no more hard cases to chase down.

John Barlow is driven to kill Duel himself. But then again, Barlow loves to kill. Anyone, and everyone that has gotten in his way has died. And Duel has gotten in his way, more than once.

Mr. Howard has written a wonderful story full of emotions. You will love St. Elmo and absolutely root for him. He may be bad, but you can't help but love him. You will absolutely hate Barlow, and as the story continues that hatred will grow.

You will understand Sam, and even understand why she does what she does to live. Her love for Duel is all consuming. However so is her fear of him leaving her again.

All bets are off with this one. Lance Howard has hit a homerun. WANTED is absolutely fantastic, and only leaves you wanting more. I recommend this book to everyone. If you like westerns you will love this one. If you don't like westerns you still will love this one. So you can't miss. And neither has Lance Howard. Another bulls eye.

Gripping, Gritty Tale
Gripping tale of a manhunter against a vicious outlaw. Well-fleshed out characters and plenty of action. Another great western, but so much more!

We The Angels

Author: Howard Reed
Average review score:

A Rush of emotion.
"An intense word-born excursion to the past. To the very beginning of it all. In long profound and passionate whole chapters of verse Reed probes, withdraws, extends and flings forword metaphoric observations of the creation and "Where you have been?" ... (An) inspired telling of the journey (we all took) from Darkness to Light..."

The Book Reader (Spring/Summer 1999)

A Magical read!
I find "We The Angels" to be one of those rare books that I will read and re-read over and over. It is so beautifully written and it touches some deep inner part of me that responds with vivid images, remembrances and exraordinarily lucid dreams. Thank you Howard!

The Weed and the Winter Solstice
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (August, 2000)
Author: Howard E. Cook
Average review score:

Little-known masterpiece
"A luminously dark tale of and for our times"--Jose Arguelles; a novel set in the mid 20th century in the Great Smoky Mountains of Southern Appalachia, with a brief throwback to the legend of an 1830 murder incident, many modern incidents and fleshed-out characters. A very interesting book; at one point the scope reminded me of les Miserables. I found it more gripping than even Cold Mountain.

Another masterpiece from the South.
This revised edition of THE WEED & THE WINTER SOLSTICE corrects 104 printer's errors in the Limited First Edition, which is now our of print. If you are lucky enough to own a copy of that 1st edition and would like to make a handsome profit on it try offering it on bibliofind.com at 5 times what you paid for it. SWIFTER THAN EAGLES, the author's nonfiction novel, was recently offer there at 6 times the original price; it did not stay there long. Since the reviews for this revised edition of THE WEED & THE WINTER SOLSTICE are not in, as of this date, we quote here some reviews of the Limited First Edition. Jose Arguelles summed it up neatly, calling it simply "A luminously dark tale of and for our time." WEST COST REVIEW OF BOOKS said this: "Author Howard Cook presents several profound themes that beg to be noticed and analyzed. Lovers of allegory will be in heaven." Those 2 reviews concentrate on the literary qualities of THE WEED & THE WINTER SOLSTICE. Other reviewers read it simply as entertainment: "The novel has all the elements of an absorbing thriller and prime time TV show," said one; "Whatever you want, whatever you may be looking for, you'll find in this one," said another. THE MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW, which placed it "on the fiction shelf with the works of Steinbeck and Bellow," wrote this: "A welcome addition to the library of outstanding fiction, THE WEED & THE WINTER SOLSTICE was featured and highly recommended in our TV special publicizing some of the best books available." Five stars for another masterpiece from the South.

Wet Scrubbers, Second Edition
Published in Paperback by Technomic Pub Co (20 February, 1996)
Authors: Kenneth C. Schifftner and Howard E. Hesketh Ph.D.
Average review score:

Outstanding
I worked for a year designing/specifying/sizing wet scrubbers, and this book was open on my desk the whole time. It's fantastic.

A must-read for air pollution control practitioners.
The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers found that the authors, Kenneth Schifftner, Product/District Manager for Bionomics Industries, and Howard Hesketh, Professor of Engineering (Retired), Air Pollution Control, at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, have provided a most useful resource to the pollution control community. Mr. Schifftner is the patentee of a scrubber with unusual capabilities, the Catenary Grid ®, also described in the book. The reviewers, having successfully applied that scrubber design to a high solids-loading, toxic, plant exhaust stream in one case, and to a toxic plant exhaust stream, in an urban setting near a school, can attest to the soundness of the application principles described in the book.

The authors have demonstrated again in this second edition the practical value of their more than fifty-year experience in wet scrubber research, development, and plant installations. They cover every important type of wet scrubber for industrial and municipal applications. Practical considerations are highlighted throughout. As an example, they describe twenty-three considerations for successful gas absorption in liquid streams. Provision of design methods, reference data, and typical calculations lead users to the proper choices for scrubbing equipment and the auxiliary systems for the wide range of gaseous, misty, and particulate-loaded conditions that all pollution control practitioners face.

Wharton on Making Decisions
Published in Digital by John Wiley & Sons ()
Authors: Steven L. Hoch, Howard Kunreuther, and Stephen J. Hoch
Average review score:

Great Book!
Informative---covers just about every area of decision sciences.
Very readable with solid examples and great insight into the theory as well as the the subtleties and nuances of making better decisions. Academically oriented, but with strong practical applications.

Highly Recommended!
Stephen J. Hoch and Howard C. Kunreuther present a series of articles about making decisions written by professors at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. The articles describe how decisions are made using an ideal scenario, and then offer practical suggestions on how to make better business decisions. The book is designed to help top executives and managers use the latest methods of analysis and reasoning in decision making. Some may find this approach overly academic - in that many of the research findings are based on social laboratory experiments, statistical analysis and modeling - but if you've been making decisions based on guts, glory and a coin toss, the latest scholarship does offer some stronger strategies. We [...] found several in this solid book that will be of great help to managers dealing with employees, executives formulating strategy and finance or compliance officers weighing corporate risks.

What Would You Do?
Published in Paperback by Herald Pr (May, 1994)
Author: John Howard Yoder
Average review score:

Wonderful collection of intelligent writings!
My father gave me this book as a way to thouroughly explain his pacifism. It did. This is truly an inspiring book and a must read for anyone, on either side of the argument! Get this book today; I promise you won't regret it.

Pacifists Take Note
This book is a collection of answers to the age-old question: If a violent person threatened a loved one, what would you do? It is a treasured part of my library because it provides both simple responses (my favorite being courtesy of Joan Baez), and complex discussions of the values shifts necessary to to deny violence in all its forms. You won't come away from this book with a pat answer to a troubling question, but at least you will know there ARE answers.

Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care for Remote Locations
Published in Paperback by Jones & Bartlett Pub (January, 1998)
Authors: Howard D. Backer, National Safety Council, and Wilderness Medical Society
Average review score:

Wilderness First Aid for the real world outdoorsman
This book is a comprehensive guide to First Aid in the wilderness. It points out many injuries and illnesses that you'd commonly find while in the wilderness, and easy-to-follow explainations of what they are, what caused them, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. This is perfect for a Boy Scout or Girl Scout class in First Aid for an upcoming trip; as I use it as the text for the class I teach.
The only area I would say that it is lacking in is the serious, life-threatening injuries, ie cardiopulmonary arrest, tension pneumothorax, etc. However, to be perfectly honest, in the wilderness, injuries like that are very difficult to survive if you are not easily acessable by EMS. Additionally, those injuries are complex, and the treatments aren't always easy to do in the wilderness, much to the contrary, in fact. So understanding them might be important to the field leader, but I don't dwell on the severe injuries too much when I teach because they are difficult to understand, and the treatment is always "Get them to an ambulace and to a hospital as fast as you can."

I highly recommend this book for all Wilderness First aid, and for Mountaineering First Aid.

Excellant Comprehensive Basic and Advanced First Aid Book
This is an excellant book especially if you have no experience at all in dealing with emergancy first aid. It give clear, consice information on everything from simple to complete lacerations, emergancy child birth to what to have in a First Aid Kit. Extremely well written and easy to understand.
